CHESHIRE, Conn. — Kurtz Farms has room to grow – about 20 indoor acres and 74 years worth. The next few months are expected to be the busiest of the year for the family-owned business.
“In the industry, the springtime, these are the biggest few months," said EJ Kurtz, who is the third-generation owner of Kurtz Farms. "These are the most important three months.”
“Right now we are gearing up for spring production,” added Hughie Kurtz, EJ's cousin. Hughie is among the five family members who help run the business.
Between bedding plants, Garden Mums, Poinsettias, and Marigolds, the wholesale greenhouse is getting ready for warmer temperatures to arrive – which are forecast to come by the weekend.
“There is plenty of color in here and we are anticipating an early spring like we always do," Hughie Kurtz said. "The challenges are just anticipating the weather – what will it be like in two or three weeks?”
The first flower to leave the farm is usually the Pansies – thousands of them are ready for garden center displays -- Kurtz Farms supplies vendors that range from small garden centers to big box stores.
“As far as planting and getting everything ready, we’re ready to go,” EJ Kurtz said.
