Branford man arrested for dumping day-old kittens in the trash: Animal control

Branford Animal Control was called to the Island View Complex on a rainy Aug. 15 after a resident reported there were newborn kittens crying in the dumpster.

BRANFORD, Conn. — A Branford man has been arrested for allegedly dumping four newborn kittens into a dumpster in August, which resulted in two of the kittens' deaths.

An arrest warrant obtained by FOX61 details what happened when neighbors discovered the kittens and what led up to the arrest of Denzel Hunter, 30.

Branford Animal Control was called to the Island View Complex on a rainy Aug. 15 after a resident reported there were newborn kittens crying in the dumpster.

The resident, her husband, and her granddaughter got the kittens out of the dumpster and found that one of the four had died, with another one passing away before animal control arrived, according to the arrest warrant.

Animal control brought the two kittens to an area veterinarian, where they were warmed up.

One of the neighborhood children told the resident that a friend had a cat named Zoe and that if her father found out Zoe had kittens, he would be mad, the resident told Animal Control.

Animal control went to Hunter's home and asked about the kittens. He admitted to the animal control officer that he put the kittens in his garbage and threw the bag into the dumpster because he thought the kittens were dead, the arrest warrant states. Hunter told the officer that the kittens were between 24-48 hours old.

Animal control then took four cats out of the home, including Zoe, who was reunited with her two surviving kittens. The other cats removed from the home were Raven, who was also pregnant, and two not neutered males, Senor and Chadwick. None of the cats were vaccinated for rabies or distemper and at least one went outdoors.

Hunter was arrested and charged with two counts of felony cruelty to animals. He is being held on a $25,000 bond.
