Fire at Stamford home with 'severe hoarding conditions' leaves 1 dead: Firefighters

STAMFORD, Conn. — A man died in a house fire in Stamford on Friday evening, according to local firefighters.

Firefighters and police were called to a home on Powell Place just before 7 p.m. Friday, with 911 callers reporting smoke coming from the second floor.

Arriving fire crews found heavy fire in the first and second floors. "Severe hoarding conditions" made it challenging for firefighters to operate.

After extinguishing the main part of the fire and making searches around the house, firefighters found a man on the first floor, firefighters said. Stamford police identified the victim as Mark Palmer, 67.

"The Stamford Fire Department expresses its gratitude to all responders involved in swiftly addressing this incident and extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the victim," Stamford firefighters said.

The Stamford Fire Marshal Division is investigating the cause and origin of the fire.
