1 dead after 3-vehicle crash on I-91 south in Rocky Hill: State police

The cause of the crash is currently unknown.

ROCKY HILL, Conn. — One person is dead after a 3-vehicle crash on Interstate 91 south in Rocky Hill Saturday night, according to Connecticut State Police.

Troopers arrived onto the highway near exit 23 at 11:45 p.m. for the reported crash.

Based on preliminary information, state police determined that an Acura TLX was traveling behind a tractor trailer traveling north of exit 22S in the center lane of three. 

The Acura collided into the rear of the tractor trailer for an unknown reason, and then crashed into a second Acura TLX, state police said.

Following the collision, the second Acura went into the right shoulder of the highway and hit a metal beam guardrail. The car went across all three lanes and hit another guardrail in the left shoulder, according to state police. 

The second Acura then began rolling over and came to a final stop in the grassy center median. State police identified its driver as 25-year-old Dandre Charles of East Hartford who died from his injuries.

The first Acura hit a metal beam guardrail in the right shoulder and came to a stop. Three out of the five people in the car, including the driver, were taken to the hospital for minor injuries, state police said. The others had no reported injuries.

The tractor trailer also stopped in the right shoulder, according to state police. The driver had no reported injuries.

The highway was reported closed at 12 a.m. as the Collision Analysis Reconstruction Squad investigated the crash, and has reopened as of 6 a.m.
