Bricks falling onto road after New Britain commercial building fire, mayor warns

Columbus Boulevard between High Street and Washington Street will be closed for "at least the next 48 hours," the mayor said.

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. β€” The New Britain mayor warned city residents Wednesday that "bricks are falling into the road" after a commercial building fire from Tuesday evening.

Fire Chief Raul Ortiz said that a call came in around 8 p.m. Tuesday about a fire on 59 High Street. Crews from the city's fire department, along with mutual aid, responded to put out the flames.

Firefighters worked to keep the second-alarm fire under control "through the night" and into Wednesday at the 3-story commercial building where aerospace manufacturer Polar Corp is located, across from the New Britain YMCA, city Mayor Erin Stewart said.

No injuries were reported and it is currently unknown how the fire started.

According to Stewart, the city is waiting on professionals to make a determination, but the building appears to be a total loss.

"Big thank you to our fire department for their tireless work through the night and into today to keep this under control," Stewart said.

Hi everyone, quick update on the High Street fire. πŸ”₯ Big thank you to our fire department for their tireless work through the night and into today to keep this under control. As you can see the stability of the structure is certainly compromised. Columbus Blvd between High and Washington will remain shut down for at least the next 48 hours until a structural engineer can get out there To assess the safety of The building. Right now bricks are falling into the road and we do not want anyone to be hurt if conditions continue to deteriorate. The building is looking like a total loss at this point, but we will wait for the professionals to tell us one way or another. We are in communication with the property owner. It’s been a heck of a day, but we will continue to work through it. Thank you to our dedicated staff. πŸπŸ’›
