WATERTOWN, Connecticut — A Watertown man was charged with animal cruelty on Thursday after his dog was found injured and his cat was found dead back in March.
Watertown police said Justin Kontout, 41, was charged with animal cruelty and was held on a $50,000 bond and was later arraigned at the Waterbury Superior Court.
The incident that led to his arrest happened in March when Watertown Animal Control Officers were made aware of injuries sustained to Kontout’s hound mix dog and also found Kontout’s cat dead.
Animal Control Officers investigated the injuries to the dog with a veterinarian and found injuries to his leg and hip as well as a cut to his head.
The dog was taken into temporary care of the town.
The dead cat was taken into custody and significant injuries were found that lead to it's death.
Animal Control Officers aided by the Patrol Division and Detective Bureau completed their investigation and executed search warrants into the animal abuse investigation leading to the development of probable cause and the arrest of Kontout.
Watertown Animal Control filed civil judicial proceedings in the Waterbury Civil Court at which time a judge ordered that the custody of the dog be awarded to the town.
The dog has recovered from his injuries and has been adopted into another home with another dog to play with.
