The Lyman Orchards Corn Maze offers a direct path to help their charity

The Wizard of Oz-themed maze marks the 24th year of a tradition.

MIDDLEFIELD, Conn. — Each year the theme changes at Lyman Orchards in Middlefield, from the Yankees and Red Sox to the UConn Huskies, to a corn cut out of Charles Lindbergh, to this year; The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

The Lyman Orchards Corn Maze has been up and running for weeks and beyond all the twists and turns that the maze is famous for there is a direct route to their charity. For the past 24 years, a dollar of every maze ticket sold has gone to benefit the American Cancer Society.

"We made a decision at the beginning to donate a dollar for every ticket sold to the American Cancer Society and after this year we are going to be near $800,000 so it’s been beyond our imagination how popular it’s been and how much we have been able to raise for the Cancer Society," said John Lyman, the owner of Lyman Orchards.

While the corn stalks have turned from green to brown due to recent rains, Lyman says they are thriving in the fields. Lyman estimated most stalks are standing around 12 feet tall across the four-acre maze.

“This year’s corn growth is probably one of the best if not the best we’ve ever seen – it’s probably a record," said Lyman.

Above all, Lyman added that the maze is made to create memories.

“You work all year for this. We have grandparents who came as kids, they brought their kids and now they are bringing their grandkids – it’s wonderful to have that tradition, that’s what makes it special," said Lyman.
