Baummer's Pond in Naugatuck back open after police investigate shooting involving officers

Police initially got a call to head to the pond for a man armed with a knife.

NAUGATUCK, Conn. — Baummer's Pond in Naugatuck is back open tonight after it was closed all day Thursday, as police investigated a shooting they said happened there this morning.

Naugatuck police said they initially got called to the pond around 9:15 a.m., with reports of a man armed with a knife. When the two officers arrived, police said they encountered the man, which led to a confrontation where both officers fired their guns.

Police said the man, who has not been identified, was sent to the hospital. As of Thursday night, there were no updates on his condition. Police said the two officers also received medical attention and are "safe."

Meanwhile, some people who live nearby are feeling uneasy about what happened.

“It’s kind of a shocker that something like that could actually just happen," said Mike Torento.

Torento describes the area near the pond as peaceful, where many families take their children, and where recently, a fishing tournament was held.

"I brought my son over here, and we were fishing. That’s why it’s really a shocker, you know. You got such a family-oriented area," Torento said.

Torento said he heard part of the incident from home Thursday morning.

“I heard gunshots, pop, pop, pop. And then later on, I found out it was an officer-involved shooting," Torento said.

Some families were picking their kids up from school Thursday afternoon, tip toeing around the crime scene.

"I can’t believe it. I really can’t believe it. I pick him up almost every day over here, and it’s always quiet, nice place to walk," said Beverly Robinson, who was picking her grandson up from bus. "Nice place to just, very serene area. So, for this to be like this is, very shocking to me.”

Others, who have lived at the nearby Lantern Park Condos for years, echoed that same sentiment.

"It’s a beautiful day, there could have been a lot of people over here you know, and that’s the scary part," said Lorna Reed.

“A little nervous, nerve racking, but, glad they took care of it and, hopefully, he’s alright," said Keith Vines.

As with all shootings involving an officer, the Office of the Inspector General has taken this case over. The IG will now determine whether the actions of the officers were justified. More details on what happened are expected to be released in the coming days.

This is a developing story.
