NAUGATUCK, Conn. — Late last Thursday evening, Naugatuck police responded to Sullivan’s Café on Church Street after receiving calls that a man with a handgun was threatening customers, the police department said in a release on Tuesday.
Witnesses’ reports described a verbal argument between Richard Molyneux, 42, of Naugatuck and another customer around 11 p.m. on April 11, police said. Molyneux allegedly left the bar, pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the victim.
When officers arrived on scene, they detained Molyneux, who was found to be carrying an empty holster and a loaded magazine, police said, noting that they did not immediately find the handgun.
After an extensive search of the surrounding area, officers discovered the weapon, police said. The department said its investigation revealed that Molyneux took the handgun without the knowledge of its owner.
According to police, Molyneux was arrested and charged with theft of a firearm, first-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree threatening, interfering with a police officer, second-degree breach of peace, carrying a firearm under the influence of intoxicating liquor and carrying a pistol or revolver without a permit.
Molyneux was held on a $150,000 bond and was arraigned at Waterbury Superior Court last Friday, police said.
