Police search for driver that crashed into Meriden WWI monument

Officials said they're looking for what they believe is a Ford F-150 pickup truck that reportedly crashed into the monument Thursday night.

MERIDEN, Conn. — Meriden police are looking for a driver they said is responsible for crashing into the city's World War 1 memorial monument. 

The crash happened around 10 p.m. Thursday. Police said they were notified that a crash happened at the monument which is located at the intersection of Broad Street and East Main Street. 

When officers got to the scene, they found that the "City of Meriden's World War Roll of Honor" monument had been hit, knocked over, and severely damaged. The vehicle that reportedly crashed into the monument had driven off before police got there.

Officers found debris they believe is from the evading vehicle at the scene. Police found a part of the headlight unit, and according to the investigation, it belonged to a Ford F150 pickup truck model from 2018-2020. According to officials, the vehicle matched a witness's description.

The witness said that the truck drove south on Broad Street towards Wallingford right after the crash. Police said the truck is believed to be white, and based on the damage to the monument, the truck should have noticeable front-end damage.

Meriden officials said multiple detectives are investigating the crash and are searching the area for video or photographs that may have captured the vehicle before or after the crash.
