Police investigate after child shot, car hits 2 police cruisers

It remains uncertain whether the car involved in the collision was tied to the initial shooting

NEW HAVEN, Conn — Early on October 29, 2023, New Haven Police Officers responded to reports of gunshots near Chapel and Temple Street, where a car collided with two police cruisers at the intersection of College and George Street. A few minutes later, a juvenile gunshot victim walked in to a local hospital. 

Around 2:29 a.m., New Haven Police Officers heard what they believed to be gunshots. Upon arriving at the scene, officers encountered a sizable crowd running in various directions.

Officers then saw a car driving erratically towards oncoming traffic at the intersection of Chapel Street and Temple Street. They attempted to stop the car. However, the driver of the car refused, and collided with two police cruisers.

The driver and the passenger attempted to flee the scene, though the passenger was successfully apprehended. The driver was able to escape and the car was towed.

At approximately 2:44 a.m., the police learned of a juvenile gunshot victim who had walked into a local hospital. The victim had a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the left leg and was in stable condition.

Detectives from the Major Crimes Unit and Bureau of Identification were dispatched to the scene. During their investigation, a second crime scene was identified in the mid-block of Chapel Street between Temple and College Street. Notably, the ShotSpotter was not activated, but ballistic evidence was found on scene.

The investigation is ongoing, and it remains uncertain whether the car involved in the collision was tied to the initial shooting. Authorities are seeking information from the community, urging potential witnesses to contact detectives at 203-946-6304 or the anonymous tip-line at 866-888-TIPS (8477).
