NEWPORT, R.I.--When you think of Newport, you probably think of lobster, sailing and mansions. But muscle cars?

The newest edition to the scene is the Audrain Auto Museum, a collection of nearly 200 muscle cars, many of which you probably had in miniature form as matchbox cars when you were a child.

"People liked the idea of sporty, powerful, fast cars," said museum executive director David DeMuzio. "These are the cars you saw in the mid-'60s and mid-'70s. We all either owned one, had a father who owned one, or an uncle or a brother. These are the cool cars!"

There's only enough room to show 17-or-so cars at a time, so you may have to visit several times before you get a real feel for the collection.

The current collection includes the "speed machines," like Lamborghinis, Bugatis and Ferraris, and it ends June 26.

"This is our history, if you grew up paying attention to cars in the '60s and '70s this is the stuff you remember," DeMuzio said.

The Audrain Auto Museum is right on historic Bellevue Avenue in Newport. It costs $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $8 for students; kids under 6 are free.
