EAST HADDAM -- Emergency crews from several agencies are searched for a man missing in the Connecticut River for several hours until calling it off due to darkness.

Officials are searching for a 40-year-old man who went missing around 5:40 p.m.

Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Spokesman Keith Williams said the man appeared to be having trouble in the water before he went missing.

Williams says this is not a designated swimming area and no one should be swimming here and the water is more than thirty feet deep.

Crews will resume searching Monday morning.

A family of four from Meriden went swimming at the Gillette Castle State Park and noticed the man went missing according to officials.

DEEP EnCon police, Lyme, Chester, Deep River, Middletown, East Haddam, Portland fire departments and Connecticut state police are also on scene at the Chester-Hadlyme Ferry and boat launch.
