WEST HAVEN – A New Haven man was charged with sexually assaulting a West Haven hotel maid.

West Haven Police said they responded to The Best Western Hotel at 490 Sawmill Road Monday, just after noon, for an assault.

Police said a hotel employee told them she was assaulted by a hotel customer. Police said the man asked the maid to clean his room and, as she began cleaning the room, he came up from behind,  holding her and grabbing her breasts.

Police said the man and woman struggled as the suspect continued to grope and grab her. Police said she was also strangled as he put his hands around her neck and over her mouth attempting to quiet her screams.

Police said she was able to get free of the suspect and run from the room. Police later found the suspect in his room and the victim made a positive identification. The victim was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries, according to police.

Paul Stephen Lake, 22, with a last known address of Edgewood Avenue New Haven was arrested and charged with, unlawful restraint, third-degree sexual assault, strangulation, third-degree assault and disorderly conduct. He is being held on bail.
