TRUMBULL -- Blind and visually impaired veterans are taking to lakes and rivers all over the state thanks to an outfit called Veterans Rowing and Kayaking.

The organization was formed three years ago and strives to engage blind and visually impaired vets by providing exercise from rowing, as well as camaraderie from other vets involved in the program.

"It does so much for them, not only is it therapeutic, it's physically challenging," said Nick Montini, the chairman of Veterans Rowing and Kayaking, Inc.

Marco Marini, a Navy vet who suffers from multiple sclerosis and is now legally blind, spent part of the morning rowing with a guide on a tandem kayak. Marini, from West Haven, said, "It's being out with the guys, it's exercising in the sun, it's excellent every week."

Montini mentioned the program has grown to about 500 veterans in six states. To find out more about Veterans Rowing and Kayaking click here.
