Connecticut Creatives: Sarah Baskin

"Watercolor is considered to be the hardest painting medium, because the paint has a mind of its own," Baskin said.

EAST HADDAM, Conn. — East Haddam impressionist Sarah Baskin paints landscapes, seascapes, and figures in watercolors and oils. Baskin has studied under artists like Brazilian watercolorist Eudes Correia and Australian impressionist Colley Whisson. She often paints en plein air.

Impressionism is a mid-to-late 19th century painting style that is characterized by small, visible brushstrokes that leave the impression of form, unblended color and has an emphasis on the precise depiction of natural light.

“In each image I paint, I aspire to be a painter of light, focusing on how the sunlight plays across the side of a building or how it sparkles in the water and on how shadows stretch across a landscape,” said Baskin.

With her piece, Sweet Pea, Baskin shows off her ability to capture light on the water. The way she blends the oil paint captures the impression of the boat’s reflection.

Persistence, on the other hand, shows off her ability to conquer shadow. The shadows define the man’s form without being overpowering. On his hat, you can see the delicate touch it took to give the bill form.

“I love to paint outside, en plein air, in challenging conditions of changing light, moisture, wind, heat and cold—and the occasional passerby—that force me to paint more quickly than I do in the studio and make me a better, looser painter,” said Baskin.

Baskin held a solo exhibition at the Clinton Art Gallery last year. She also organized an art exhibit for the Maine Lobstermen’s Community Alliance in Brooksville, Maine. She recruited 35 artists to participate in the exhibition. They raised more than $3,000.
