NEW HAVEN–A local golfer got a special send-off before making the trip of a lifetime.

Brett Stegmaier is one of the only local golfers to make the Travelers Championship this year, and he got a sweet goodbye at the New Haven Country Club, where he’s played and trained.

The 33-year-old attended Hand High School in Madison, as well as Avon Old Farms School. He’s been a pro-golfer for 10 years now, but hasn’t been able to get the traction to be successful–until now.

Stegmaier, who nearly gave up the sport in 2010 because of an injury, got his PGA Tour card last year and finished second place at one competition this year.

Now, he gets to play in his home state and be the hometown hero–he’s the first player from the New Haven Country Club to earn his PGA Tour card!

“Last year at this time I was really struggling with my game all of a sudden it changed and to be able to do stuff like this is certainly an honor and hopefully I don’t forget where I came from,” said Stegmaier.
