Morning commute could be hard for drivers after wintry mix

Crews were out pre-treating roads Wednesday.

NEW HARTFORD, Conn. — A wintry mix had crews out on the roads trying to keep them as safe as possible for drivers.

"We always prepare for the worst and hope for the best," said Dwight Ryniewicz, director of public works for the town of Vernon.

He said with this type of storm, it’s important to pre-treat the roads.

"Make sure that we have material down in case the temperatures change. This is kind of an interesting storm right now because it could be switching over to rain but we don’t want to take any chances, make sure that we have material out on the roads, keep the traveling public safe," Ryniewicz said.

However, part of the responsibility of keeping the roads safe also falls on drivers.

This winter has not brought us many storms so officials want to remind everyone that when inclement weather hits, it’s important to take it slow.

"Leave a little bit earlier, allowing them to time to drive slow and safely to get to their location," said Sgt. Christine Jeltema, of the Connecticut State Police. "You have to be more careful due to the slippery roads and the conditions that are out there. Visibility might be a factor in the morning as well," she said.

Just a couple of weeks ago, a firefighter and a trooper were injured after being hit by a car while responding to a crash on a morning when roads were slippery. Highlighting the importance of being cautious and looking out for anyone on the side of the road.

"It’s very important to slow down and  move over especially when you see first responders, tow trucks, or even vehicles you might see on the side of the road that are broken down," Jeltema said.

While folks head to work and school in the morning, a reminder that you’ll be sharing the roads.

"Give the plow trucks plenty of room to do their job," Ryniewicz said.
