Lamont activates severe cold weather protocol in Connecticut

The severe cold weather protocol is activated to protect vulnerable populations.

HARTFORD, Conn. — Severe cold weather is predicted within the next several days and Gov. Ned Lamont activated the state's severe cold weather protocol, as of 5:00 p.m. Friday.

The protocol is expected to remain in effect until Tuesday at noon. Over the next several days, the temperatures are expected to dip into the low teens, with wind chill values as low as -2 degrees.

"Overnight temps are expected to get very cold over the next few days," Lamont said in a tweet. "I'm activating the state's severe cold weather protocol from tonight through Tuesday. Shelters are available across Connecticut. Call 2-1-1 to get connected to these services."

In order to ensure that the most vulnerable populations receive protection from these conditions, the protocol is established. Severe cold weather conditions could be life-threatening if exposed for a long duration.

While the protocol is enacted, a system is set up for state agencies and municipalities to coordinate with United Way 2-1-1 and Connecticut’s network of shelters to ensure anyone in need can receive shelter from the outdoors, not limited to transportation to shelters.

Safety measures have been enacted at shelters and warming centers throughout Connecticut to adhere to the needs of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
