HARTFORD, Conn. — The Northern Lights could be visible in New England on Thursday night.

The forecast of a G3 magnetic storm means chances will be good to see the Aurora Borealis, better known as the Northern Lights.

Three Coronal Mass Ejections (CME) are already inbound and an additional fourth storm has prompted the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center to upgrade a G2 watch to a G3 watch.

CMEs are large expulsions of plasma and magnetic field from the sun's corona, according to the NOAA. These eruptions can create strong displays of the northern lights.

As the sun goes down over North America, the northern lights are very likely to be seen over high latitudes, and with a strong enough storm like the one forecast on Thursday night, the Auroras have been seen as low as Illinois and Oregon.

It could be visible near or even past the red line shown on the Space Weather Prediction Center's forecast above.

The forecast from the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks shows the areas that have the best chance of seeing the lights on Thursday too.

The key to viewing is having a clear view north, free of clouds and any light pollution from nearby cities.
