MANCHESTER, Conn. — For the past 75 years, things have been tastefully done at Shady Glen in Manchester. The family-owned restaurant is celebrating three-quarters of a century in business after finishing off a busy holiday run, where their signature “Golden Crown” Cheeseburgers and homemade ice cream, among other popular menu items, kept customers happy.
Billy Hoch, who owns Shady Glen with his wife Amy, is the fourth generation at Shady Glen; he began work at his family’s restaurant in 1973.
“We try to offer a theme, it’s generated by service, cleanliness, and quality of the products,” Billy Hoch said.
“We have a lot of customers that come every day so it’s like family, and a lot of families -- especially during the holidays -- they all come here and so it’s a fun time to work,” Amy Hoch added.
Shady Glen was honored by the Connecticut Restaurant Association and has received numerous mentions in national publications for both their ice cream and their cheeseburgers.
“We try to give that same Shady Glen experience from the first of the month to the end of the month,” Billy Hoch said.
Amy Hoch added, “Seventy-five years, we’re pretty proud of that,” Amy Hoch added as she looked across the restaurant during the breakfast rush.
“We try to offer that feel-good atmosphere and it’s very satisfying to see a customer walk out and wave and smile,” Billy Hoch said.
