Around 4:20 p.m. on Thursday, the Bridgeport Emergency Communications Center received a panic alarm from the TD Bank at 1000 Lafayette Boulevard, police said, noting that they quickly confirmed an armed robbery had taken place.

Officers in the area found a suspect matching the description at 98 Highland Avenue at the Charles F. Greene Homes Apartments between buildings 4 and 5, police said. Officers confronted the suspect, who sat on the ground; he threw a black item under a nearby car that was found by police and determined to be a facsimile gun consistent with a Beretta model 92 pistol, according to police.

Police said that a witness positively identified the suspect, who was determined to be Powell. A backpack with $1,350 was found, counted by the bank manager and returned to the bank.

In the booking area, police said a paper note was located on Powell; he attempted to destroy the note, claiming it to be a love letter, but police said it was consistent with witness statements regarding the note shown during the robbery.

Powell’s bond was set at $100,000, police said.
