Family of man killed by Hartford officer speaks out after new video released

The daughter of Jaime Grant says releasing the entire body cam video would give their family some kind of peace so they could see what really happened.

HARTFORD, Conn. — Just a day after state officials released new video footage from a deadly police shooting in Hartford, the family of the man shot and killed by police is calling for the state to release all of the video footage from Monday’s shooting.

The daughter of Jaime Grant said releasing the entire body cam video would give their family some kind of peace so they could see what happened in the deadly shooting from start to finish.

“The way he went out was not my perspective of him. This is so like shocking to me,” said Lilyanna Spence.

Grant was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Hartford Monday on Westland and Barbour Street. Surveillance video released by the inspector general shows Grant exiting the passenger side of the car at a routine traffic stop raising a gun in the direction of Officer Brian Sulliman and firing.

Officer Sulliman responded by pulling out his service weapon and firing back.

“My dad wouldn’t just do that for no reason. He’s not that type of person. So, obviously, something triggered him, or I don’t know,” said Spence.

The video then shows Grant trying to run away, while Officer Sulliman fires his weapon multiple times, hitting Grant and causing him to fall in the street.

“They really shouldn’t have shot him so many times seeing that he was no longer trying to shoot back. He was more so trying to get away,” said Spence.

Bobby McDonald, a retired Secret Service agent and a current lecturer for the criminal justice department at the University of New Haven spoke on what he saw in the video.

“But obviously he’s in a neighborhood. He pointed the gun at the officer. That just tells us that he is either going to continue to point that gun at another officer coming in to help that situation or people in the community. We train under certain situations and how to handle things but when things happen in real life there really is no playbook,” said McDonald.

FOX 61 obtained new surveillance video from Grant’s family who got it from a nearby store.

This video shows a different angle of the shooting.

After Grant fell to the ground Officer Sulliman can be seen running towards him in the intersection, running back to his car to retrieve something, and then back to Grant.
The video released by the Inspector General doesn’t show this. Grant’s daughter says their family wants the body cam video released in its entirety.

“They definitely cut the body camera short and they’re not showing it all,” said Spence. “I never would think this is my life. This is stuff you see on TV. This is stuff like anything I ever expected. Literally the day before this happened. I was just with my dad.”

FOX61 reached out to the inspector general’s office regarding their protocol for releasing videos in their entirety and is waiting to hear back.
