2nd overnight fire destroys Wampanoag Country Club in West Hartford

The investigation is being led by the fire marshal's office, along with the police department and the Connecticut State Police Fire Explosion and Investigative Unit.

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — Firefighters were called to the Wampanoag Country Club in West Hartford Sunday, just a day after a heavy fire in the building was extinguished Saturday, according to town Fire Chief Greg Priest.

The fire, reported nearly 24 hours after fire crews were first called to Wampanoag Drive, consumed a "majority of the structure" and caused partial structural collapses "throughout the entire building," Priest said.

No one was hurt as a result of the fire, and Priest said that there was no information to suggest anyone had been inside the building at the time.

According to Priest, firefighters received a report at 2:18 a.m. from a nearby resident that fire was visible from the top of the Wampanoag Country Club building.

A fire crew arrived at 2:23 a.m. and called for additional fire crews after finding a heavy fire through the roof.

The West Hartford Police Department and a American Medical Response crew also responded to assist, according to Priest.

Priest said firefighters made a "defensive attack" on the outside of the building and upgraded the fire to a second alarm, bringing in help from mutual aid stations, including fire departments from UConn, Avon and New Britain.

All on-duty fire companies from the West Hartford Fire Department were used, Priest said. Fire departments from Hartford and Newington, along with American Medical Rescue, assisted with town coverage while units from West Hartford were dealing with the country club fire.

The bulk of the fire was knocked at 3:57 a.m., according to Priest. Firefighters remained at the scene throughout Sunday morning while they continued to suppress the fire by hosing down the building.

Wampanoag Drive is currently closed while the fire department is at the scene of the fire. The investigation is being led by the town fire marshal's office, along with the police department and the Connecticut State Police Fire Explosion and Investigative Unit.

Firefighters had said Saturday that they were called at 2:10 a.m. for fire and smoke coming from the roof and loading dock area. There had also been 20 lb. cylinders on fire that were releasing gas. Crews were eventually able to access the attic to extinguish the fire from the roof and off of ladders.

The cause of the fires on Saturday and Sunday are currently unknown.
