Community holds vigil for boy who died in Meriden go-kart crash

Candles and stuffed toys were left in the boy's honor at a vigil Saturday night.

MERIDEN, Conn. — A community in Meriden came together Saturday night to hold a candlelight vigil for a six-year-old who died after a go-kart accident on April 9.

Dozens of people from the community came out to the Meriden Green to support the grieving family and mourn the loss of Adrian Warzecha, leaving candles and stuffed toys in his honor.

The six-year-old died from a serious head injury in a go-kart crash near Kronenberger Park. Police said Warzecha was driving the go-kart with his four-year-old sibling riding along, when the crash occurred.

Police said Warzecha was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. His sibling is expected to be okay.

Meriden Mayor Kevin Scarpati said the entire community is grieving with the family.

Scarpati said, “I can't comprehend or really fully understand what it is they're going through losing a child, but you know, members of the community coming out showing their love showing their support, I really think is what tonight and this time is about.”

FOX61 respected the family's request for privacy and put cameras away during the vigil.

The family released doves in honor of Warzecha during the vigil. One quickly flew away, while another circled the crowd before also flying off.

Scarpati said the outpouring of support has been overwhelming.

“The community itself wants to just really be there to support them," Scarpati said. "And so anyway, we can do that by helping raise funds by being at events like this by just standing by them during this difficult time. That's, that's what we're here for."

The family has started a GoFundMe to help with funeral expenses which have raised over $34,000 in just there days. The fundraiser can be visited here.
