Cause of deaths revealed after couple found dead in New Haven home

Neighbors are left shocked, thinking about what happened.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A couple was found dead in their Russell Street home in New Haven on Thursday morning, and autopsies reveal one was killed and another took his own life.

New Haven police said the call initially came in at 8:16 a.m. for a report of the husband and wife found unresponsive in their home. The 52-year-old woman and the 62-year-old man had both been shot. Police said a pistol was found on the scene.

Late on Friday, police identified the couple as Jennifer Green and her husband Stanley Green.

Firefighters attempted to render aid to the couple, but both were pronounced dead on the scene.

Someone who lived in the home was there with officers when they arrived, speaking with and cooperating with investigators.

“It’s the first time I’ve seen or heard of anything. At least in this immediate area,” said one neighbor, who did not want to reveal his identity. “Everybody had no words. They were always super nice to everybody in the area.”

Both died from gunshot wounds, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) confirmed to FOX61 on Saturday. Jennifer Green's death was ruled a homicide, and Stanley Green had turned the gun onto himself, according to the OCME.

Neighbors were left shocked, thinking about what happened.

“Nothing that would raise an eyebrow or, you know, make you question anything that’s going on in their home life. I mean everybody was really cool,” said the unidentified neighbor.

“It was shocking. Never would have thought it. It’s a pretty quiet neighborhood,” said Cathy, another nearby neighbor.

Cathy said she’s lived on that street for 23 years. She’s an early riser and didn’t see or hear anything alarming Thursday until the street was lined with cop cars.

“At this moment, while there’s still an ongoing investigation, we believe it was an isolated incident and police are not looking for any particular suspect,” said New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker.

Mayor Elicker said New Haven, like many other cities, is both struggling with and making progress on the frequency of violence in the city.

“We have seen overall the number of people shot in the city dramatically decrease. Unfortunately, the number of people who have been shot that have died is more than last year,” Elicker said.

Not counting these two latest deaths, 22 people have been killed in New Haven so far this year. Last year, 14 people were killed in the city.

When it comes to non-fatal shootings, 107 people were shot in New Haven in 2022. So far this year, 74 people have been shot in the city.
