Elderly care worker arrested for stealing from Hamden couple’s bank account

A woman made a complaint to Hamden Police in March 2012 after discovering that someone had been stealing from her elderly parents.

The woman was reviewing the her parents’ finances when she discovered numerous unauthorized debit purchases and cash withdrawals, totaling $3,846. The purchases and withdrawals were made with her mother’s debit card.

Her parents were living at the Atria Larson Place assisted living facility located at 1450 Whitney Ave. at the time of the theft, and the couple’s daughter had hired Elite Homecare to provide nurses aides for her parents.

Hamden Police investigated and found that Moneek Grant, an employee of Elite Homecare who had worked in the couple’s home, was responsible for the theft.

On April 25, 2016, police arrested Moneek Grant, 38, of Norwalk. She is charged with identity theft in the second degree, conspiracy to commit identity theft in the second degree, fraudulent use of an ATM, larceny in the third degree and conspiracy to commit larceny in the third degree. She is being held on a $100,000 bond and will appear in court on May 9.

FOX 61 reached out to Hamden Police to ask about why it took four years for an arrest to be made, but have not yet heard back.

Grant was previously convicted in 2012 for being an accomplice to a serial bank robber responsible for holding up six banks across the state and stealing more than $15,000. She was sentenced at the time to 2 1/2 years in prison for that crime. She was also previously convicted of third-degree assault.
