OLD LYME -- One man has died after falling through the ice at Rogers Lake in Old Lyme. First responders were able to pull another man from the freezing lake.

State Police from Troop F said they were called to the lake about 3:15 p.m. for calls that two people had fallen into the water.

According to police, two men, 61-year-old Lawrence Buhl of North Haven and 59-year-old Harry Jewett of Old Lyme were skating on the ice when it broke and they fell into the water.

When emergency personnel arrived, they found Buhl submerged up to his shoulders and clinging to the edge of the ice about 30 yards from shore. Jewett had gone under and not resurfaced.

Using safety ropes and a nearby canoe, rescuers were able to bring Buhl to shore. He was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for hypothermia for treatment.

Old Lyme firefighters, state police, and first responders from nearby towns conducted an extensive search for Jewett. A diver from the Guilford Fire Department found him at about 4:30 p.m. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy.
