BRIDGEPORT - One of Connecticut’s few remaining Pearl Harbor veterans passed away at the beginning of the year and a memorial service was held for him on Sunday.

Jack Stoeber, according to his wife, just before the Milford resident was supposed to turn 98.

Stoeber was a gunner aboard the U.S.S. Whitney when the Japanese attacked. He also served aboard the U.S.S. Pickens at Iwo Jima, transporting injured Marines.

Stoeber’s grave marker is in a Milford cemetery, but his ashes were scattered throughout different locations, including Pearl Harbor, and in Long Island Sound in Bridgeporton Sunday.
