GREENWICH — Metro-North Railroad has been delayed after a train struck and killed a person on the track in Connecticut.

Sources tell Fox CT the 28-year-old woman went down on the tracks to pick up either a handbag or wallet, which she had dropped while standing on the platform.

“About 9:26 this morning, we received a call from the Metro North Rail Traffic Control Center that train 1514 had struck a female at Cos Cob station,” said Timothy Denmark of the Metropolitan Transit Authority Police. The train was traveling at 45 mph when it struck the woman.

This was an express train from Grand Central heading to New Haven; it was not stopping in Cos Cob where the accident took place. That is why it was traveling more rapidly than other trains do as they approach stations.

The MTA says people crossing from one side of the tracks to another is a common problem they try their best to address. “But a, a little common sense goes a long way,” said Denmark.

The commuter railroad said the incident at the Cos Cob station in Greenwich Friday morning delayed service by about 30 to 40 minutes. Passengers who were headed from Grand Central Terminal in New York to New Haven were transferred to another train.

It happened around 9:30 a.m. Friday.
