Waterford High School to reopen Friday following bomb threat

School district officials said Waterford HS administration received a bomb threat Thursday morning. The situation remains under investigation.

WATERFORD, Conn. — Police continue to investigate a threat made to Waterford High School Thursday morning.

School district officials said in a letter to parents/guardians and staff that Waterford HS administration received a bomb threat and acted upon it immediately.

The school was then evacuated, following safety protocols.

According to Superintendent Thomas Giard III, the field house areas were inspected and cleared to bring staff and students in from the inclement weather. The entire building was also inspected and cleared and the building is deemed safe for occupancy.

Waterford Police said in a Facebook post, "Members of the Patrol Division and both Student Resource Officers assisted with the search of the school. We utilized regional assets including the K9 Units from the Mashantucket Tribal Police, Mohegan Sun Tribal Police, and the Lawrence and Memorial Hospital that are trained in explosive detection. No suspicious packages or devices have been located at the school."

Waterford High School dismissed students early due to the ongoing investigation and cancelled all classes for the remainder of the day, including for students on remote learning.

"We are proud of our administration, staff and students and the way that they handled a challenging situation," Giard wrote. "We are confident in our process and our collaboration with the Waterford Police Department."

Officials say Waterford High School will be open as scheduled Friday, October 30.

The situation remains under investigation by the Waterford Police.
