WEST HARTFORD -- A record number of people are expected to be traveling this holiday, according to AAA.

Almost a third of Americans plan to travel over the holiday, with 100.5 million traveling 50 miles or more from home. That is a 1.4 percent increase over 2014, a number that's been growing since 2008.

In New England, a record 4.4 million people will be traveling more than 50 miles for the holiday. Most of them, 3.9 million, will be driving.

You can find about two-thirds of U.S. stations selling gas under $2 per gallon. AAA said the national average price of gas is about 41 cents less than a year ago.

“Rising incomes and the lowest gas prices we’ve seen in years means more money in people’s pockets and, apparently, they are choosing to spend that money on travel,” says AAA spokesperson Amy Parmenter.

Meanwhile, if you're heading to the airport, give your self more than just the typical "extra time."

Bradley International Airport is expecting heavy travel this week, and increased security measures in the wake of recent terror attacks around the world mean longer wait times for check-in and security.

Make sure to confirm the status of your flight before leaving for the airport.
