Pet Parasite Forecast: Local prevalence of heartworm

As a reminder, mosquitoes transmit heartworms to dogs and cats.

HARTFORD, Conn — We all want to keep our furry friends safe. Luckily, keeping pets healthy is easy with the Pet Parasite Forecast. As part of today’s forecast, we’ll be continuing our discussion about the local prevalence of heartworm.

Let’s take a look at the Pet Parasite Forecast map to see what areas are most affected. As we zoom in, you can see that the overall forecasted risk of getting heartworm in Connecticut is currently low but in some counties like Tolland it’s higher than years past. This is often as a result of shelter and rescue dogs that may be carrying the parasite being brought into the county. As a reminder, mosquitoes transmit heartworms to dogs and cats.

So whether you’re spending quality time with your pets in the backyard or parks like Talcott Moutain, all the way down to Rocky Neck, be sure to take proper precautions and talk to your vet about heartworm protection for your pup.
