Pet Parasite Forecast: National Pet Wellness Month

Most of the state is experiencing a moderate-to-severe forecast infection risk.

HARTFORD, Conn — We all want to keep our pets healthy, especially during a month dedicated to their wellness! Did you know October is National Pet Wellness Month? I love running around with my own dogs, Luna and Eva – and think a great way to recognize National Pet Wellness Month is to check out our Pet Parasite Forecast.

For those who may have missed our last forecast, ehrlichiosis is a disease that develops in dogs after they are bitten by an infected tick – normally the brown dog tick or the American dog tick. Symptoms may include fever, swollen lymph nodes, respiratory distress, weight loss, spontaneous bleeding and occasionally, neurological disturbances. If your pet experiences any of these symptoms, take them to your veterinarian.

Now, let’s take a closer look at the Pet Parasite Forecast map. As you can see, most of the state is experiencing a moderate-to-severe forecast infection risk. Although these rates may seem low, they are all higher than past years. As we go into the weekend, be sure to keep your pets safe by checking your pet for ticks after spending time outdoors. Remember to always do tick checks on yourself and your family at the same time! You should also call your vet to see what parasite and tick preventive is right for your pet.
