Man hit, killed by car while crossing Berlin Turnpike: Police

The 68-year-old man, who has not been identified by police, was crossing Route 5 near the intersection of Spruce Brook Road, police said.

BERLIN, Conn. — A 68-year-old man attempting to cross the Berlin Turnpike was hit and killed by a vehicle, police said Monday.

The 68-year-old man, who police identified as Charles Bach, was crossing Route 5 near the intersection of Spruce Brook Road just after 5 a.m. on Monday when a vehicle traveling north hit him, police said.

The vehicle’s driver remained at the scene and is assisting with the investigation. Weather and reduced visibility on the roadway may have been a factor in the crash, police said.

A stretch of the Berlin Turnpike had to be temporarily closed while the crash was investigated. It has since reopened.
