Victims in fatal Wethersfield crashes identified

The Silas Deane Highway was closed between Hewitt Street and Town Line Road but has since re-opened.

WETHERSFIELD, Conn. — A crash on Silas Deane Highway in Wethersfield killed two drivers and shut down part of the road on Saturday afternoon. 

Wethersfield police said officers responded at 2:32 p.m. to the area of 1293 Silas Deane Highway to investigate the report of a two-car serious injury motor vehicle accident. 

Officers found a two-car, head-on motor vehicle collision. Both drivers sustained life-threatening injuries and were transported by ambulance to Hartford Hospital for treatment. They later died from those injuries, police confirmed. 

The victims have been identified as Zenja Ortiz, 35, of Hartford, and Jerry Kapij, 76, of Wethersfield.

The Mid-State Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene to assume the investigation. 

Silas Deane Highway was closed between Hewitt Street and Town Line Road but has since re-opened. 

This is the second major crash on Silas Deane Highway within 24 hours. David Lopez, 23, was injured when his car hit a garbage truck. He died on Dec. 1.
