WINDSOR LOCKS, Conn. — Two officers were injured during an encounter with a woman in Windsor Locks Tuesday evening, in which they were both hit by the door of her vehicle as she took off, police said.

Erica Verona, 22, is facing charges of assault on a police officer on two counts, reckless endangerment in the first degree on two counts, interfering with a police officer on two counts and breach of peace.

Two officers went to a home on Arbor Lane in Windsor Locks at 5 p.m. to meet with a Community Health Resources representative who was doing a welfare check on Verona, according to police.

Verona was noted by police as having a "long history of aggressive behavior."

As an officer and the CHR representative were talking to her outside, police said Verona began going into her vehicle parked in the driveway, telling them that she was "getting her vape pen."

According to police, the officer went over to intervene as Verona started her vehicle, "concerned for her mental health and the possibility that she was reaching for a weapon."

As the officer attempted to turn off the vehicle, police said Verona hit them in the forehead with her vape pen, leaving a laceration that began bleeding. A second officer arrived to the driver's side to assist, which is when she allegedly put the car in gear and reversed out of the driveway at a "high rate of speed."

Both officers were hit by the driver's side door as she sped away from the scene, police said.

A third officer arrived to give medical treatment to the first officer who was "bleeding heavily" from the laceration, until an EMS crew arrived, according to police. Both injured officers were taken to the hospital to be treated for lacerations and bruises and were later released.

After an alert was put out to all local police departments, Enfield police found and arrested Verona in a CVS parking lot in their town on Enfield Street.

She was held on a $350,000 bond and scheduled to appear in Hartford Superior Court on Wednesday.
