THOMASTON, Conn — A fugitive from justice has been extradited from New Jersey to Connecticut, where Thomaston police said they charged him with two counts of second-degree larceny and two counts of second-degree telephone fraud.
Ande Jiang, 25, of Highland Mills, N.Y., allegedly conned a Thomaston resident out of $30,000 earlier this year, police said.
The Thomaston Police Department said it received a fraud complaint in January from a Thomaston resident who had been scammed. Police said the scam was initiated by a computer popup alert from an individual claiming to be “Microsoft” and that the popup warned the victim that their financial accounts had been hacked and that they should contact “Microsoft” at a specific number.
The victim called the phone number on two separate days, according to police, and was told to withdraw thousands of dollars in cash from local banks and “deliver the funds so new accounts could be set up.”
Police said the scammer received a total of $30,000.
Using several technological tools, investigators were able to identify Jiang as the individual who received the funds, police said, noting that a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Jiang was taken into custody on April 17 in New Jersey and charged as a fugitive from justice, according to police, who said he was extradited back to Connecticut on Tuesday and charged.
Jiang was held in lieu of a $300,000 court-set bond and was scheduled for arraignment on Wednesday at Torrington Superior Court, according to police.
