Emergency crews respond to water rescue on Long Island Sound

The incident triggered a response from crews in Old Saybrook, Westbrook, Essex, Old Lyme, and Guilford.

OLD SAYBROOK, Conn. — A person fishing out on Long Island Sound in Old Saybrook on Tuesday morning fell from the boat and was underwater for several minutes, emergency officials told FOX61.

Emergency crews received an alert of a man going overboard in the area off of Cornfield Point around 11 a.m. on Tuesday.

Officials said the person was found and taken to the hospital. 

Officials performed CPR on the victim. The condition of the victim is not yet known. 

The incident triggered a response from crews in Old Saybrook, Westbrook, Essex, Old Lyme, and Guilford. The U.S. Coast Guard deployed a helicopter to help with the search.

A witness told FOX61 the victim was unconscious when first responders pulled him out of the water. She said they performed resuscitation efforts for some time before taking him to the hospital.

"It was humbling. It definitely can make such a peaceful place such a, a very worrisome place," Emily Curry said. "I've been coming to the beach for years and years ever since I was a little girl, our parents called us all river rats, always in the water.

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) has taken over the investigation. They said the vessel and a passenger were escorted to shore.
