Hart was last seen in the evening on Sunday, January 25 leaving a friend’s home. Vermont State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation wrote in a press release that they became aware of her disappearance on January 31, and since then have been investigating her disappearance.

It was quickly determined that Hart drove away from the home she was last seen at in a 2001 silver Pontiac Grand AM that she borrowed from an acquaintance. Early the next morning, on Monday, January 26, Vermont State Police responded to reports of a car fire at the Cornwall Covered Bridge fishing access on Swamp Road in the town of Cornwall, Vermont. The car was identified as the same one Hart was last seen with, but she was not found in the car or surrounding area.

On Tuesday, December 22, just before 1 p.m. a body was found by people who were in the area of Gap Road in Goshen, Vermont.

On Thursday, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner identified the body as that of Denise Hart, and ruled that her death was a homicide.

Police are still investigating how she died.
