Honoring Connecticut's sacrifices in the Civil War | FOX61 Student News

Civil War Reenactors come from all over the United States to portray real people that fought in the bloodiest war in American history.

SUFFIELD, Conn. — Story by Daniel Gleason Suffield High School

Civil War Reenactors come from all over the United States to portray real people that fought in the bloodiest war in American History. One reenactor, Kim Perlotto, the co-author of the 8th Connecticut’s Regimental History, portrays Sgt. Seth Plumb. Seth Plumb, a native of Litchfield, Connecticut, was killed at the battle of Fort Harrison in Virginia. He is buried in West Cemetery in Litchfield.

The 8th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry was organized in Hartford, Connecticut in September of 1861 as a response to Lincoln’s call for 300,000 volunteers after the attack upon Fort Sumter. Most of the men that enlisted came from Hartford and Litchfield County, and they fought in battles such as Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Cold Harbor.

Plumb’s uniform pieces are currently on auction after the museum that previously owned it closed down. Dan Hayden, the curator for The New England Civil War Museum, has started a “Go Fund Me” Campaign to acquire the uniform pieces, and they have collected thousands of dollars on the way to their goal. The vast majority of the museum’s collections were donations the veterans themselves gave. The museum is working hard to continue the legacy of the Connecticut soldiers that fought both to preserve the Union and abolish slavery.
