New Haven: Pizza capital of the world | FOX61 Student News

People come from all over to sample the pizza pies.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Story by Olivia Harris, Daniel Hand High School

Saturday morning and a line is already out the door.

“We literally drove up from Pennsylvania," said Marshall Brown.

In downtown New Haven, lies what some might call the pizza capital of the world.

Frank Pepe’s opened in 1928 and has grown exponentially in their popularity, not only because of their use of their coal fired oven, but because of their unique use of bread flour for their pizza dough.

“Over the years our business has just been expanded and expanded and expanded. It's incredible I don’t know how to explain it, it’s just pizza! , but it’s delicious," said Charlotte Carmona, Pepe’s Manager.

“Frank Pepe's pizza is my favorite we come from New Jersey and every time we’re heading into New England we stop here for lunch or for dinner it’s like understood, we’re gonna stop here," said Nicole Johnson.

Wooster Street in New Haven is also home to Sally’s.

Sally’s Apizza opened in 1938 and is known for their thin crust with crispy edges.

Barstool Sports owner Dave Portnoy ranked Sally’s the best pizza in New Haven.

Here in New Haven it’s more than just apizza it’s a community of people supporting each other to make what is becoming the pizza capital of the world.

With US pizza restaurant sales reaching a whopping $50 billion, New Haven is taking an ever increasing slice of the pie.
