CT residents prepares for polar vortex; businesses and outside workers layer up

One doctor FOX61 spoke to says for those working outside to be wary of hypothermia and frostbite.

CONNECTICUT, USA — It's going to be cold one these next few days and many businesses, outreach organizations and people across the state are preparing to brace against some polar temperatures.

Businesses FOX61 spoke to say for those who work in the elements they say they are ready to serve while keeping themselves warm.

Glen Damboisc with Central Auto and Transport said, "When the weather is cold we get busy because nothing is starting, trucks are freezing up, fuel lines gel up... we go out and service all of that."

According to the tow and truck repair company, they say they already have extra staffing on standby and cold procedures in place.

Damboisc said, "What we do is we emphasize with the plastic glove, a rubber glove underneath the gloves so in case they need to use their fingertips, you take your warm glove off you are still protected."

Health experts warn people if they can stay indoors, especially those with asthma, those who are elderly, or infants due to increased vulnerability to the cold.

One doctor FOX61 spoke to says for those working outside to be wary of hypothermia and frostbite.

Dr. Howard Selinger  said, "You can develop frostbite of your toes, your fingers, your earlobe, your most in as little as 30 minutes at those temperatures that is how quickly it could happen."

School systems like Hamden public schools are going remote to keep young people out of the cold.

Some Hartford residents are expressing concerns for those without a home.

One woman is even urging others to donate if possible.

Carol Guevara said, "I sometimes volunteer and give something, gloves, hats, just think of that other person that might not have more than you do."

Cornerstone Foundation is teaming up with the town of Manchester to do just that, which is to provide shelter for those in need.

Sharon Redfern said, "We have space for 9 people to come and stay overnight they have to leave during the day, but we'll have snacks and places for them to sit and be warm and watch some TV."

As a reminder, warming centers will be open through the polar vortex that will sweep the state.

Make sure you stay warm and keep your cars well maintained.
