HARTFORD, Conn. — The Northern Lights could be visible in New England on Sunday, but clouds may prevent some areas from seeing it.
An exceptionally strong geomagnetic storm is underway, thanks to a coronal mass ejection from the sun.
These can create strong displays of the aurora borealis, or northern lights.
As of Sunday evening, it's already been seen in parts of northern Europe.
As the sun goes down over North America, the northern lights are very likely to be seen over high latitudes, and this is a strong enough aurora that it's likely to be seen south into the continental United States.
It could be visible to near or even past the red line shown on the Space Weather Prediction Center's forecast above.
The key to viewing is having a clear view north, free of clouds and any light pollution from nearby cities.
In southern New England, clouds will make it a challenge.
We'll likely have at least some breaks in the clouds forming overnight, with partial clearing. But to see it here could require some luck.
