Video of Rocky Hill man fighting would-be robbers released

During the fight, three more suspects got out of a waiting vehicle and begin assaulting the victim.

ROCKY HILL, Conn. — A man was injured during a confrontation with men who were breaking into his car at his home Monday evening.

On Tuesday, police released a video of the attack.

Police said at 7:02 p.m. Monday, they received a reporting a robbery on Valley View Drive. Police said a homeowner had approached a single suspect who was in his vehicle and a fight began. During the fight, three more suspects got out of a waiting vehicle and begin assaulting the victim. The four suspects then left the area in a dark blue or black four-door Mercedes sedan.

Police arrived on the scene but were unable to locate the Mercedes or the suspects. The incident was recorded on the homeowner’s surveillance camera. Police said the suspects were three younger in-age black males and one younger in-age White/Hispanic male. The suspects were wearing masks.

A woman’s voice can be heard over the Ring camera causing would-be robbers to flee in a dark-colored Mercedes sedan.

All four suspects were still on the run Wednesday.

Two children also live at the home. The victim was treated at a local hospital for his injuries.

Douglas Russell lives next door.

“They’re a real nice family and it’s just a shame to see this happen,” he said. "There’s been a real steady increase in this thing over the past three years or so. They seem to be getting bolder and bolder.”

“The fact that it happened in daylight, that’s the scariest part. You normally think something like that might happen at night but now they’re out and about in daylight. It’s pretty scary. It really is. Three houses down. You think you’re in a safe neighborhood and you’re really not. It’s terrifying," said neighbor Debra Devanney.

Rocky Hill police said they are stepping up patrols on the streets and working with regional partners to solve these types of crimes.

“We do have a great team of detectives and there are some regional assets out looking for some of these suspects where they gain the intelligence and do locate them and take them into custody,” Sgt. Jeffrey Foss-Rugan said.

But police strongly encourage residents not to engage with suspects in the same manner.

Sgt. Foss-Rugan added, “This guy could have been seriously injured. A lot of these suspects carry guns, knives and it’s not worth it.”
