Most high schools around the country are required by law to offer an advisory program to educate students on important topics and issues.
At Conard High School, this is called Community. Community serves the purpose of educating students on current events and issues, as well as broader topics.
However, students aren’t always willing to engage in this meaningful dialogue with their peers and their teachers. In order to elevate the voices of students more, Community lessons are beginning to be planned and even taught by students. This greater student involvement will make Community a far more conducive environment for discussion and positive growth.
Students are much more likely to engage when their own peers are presenting them with information, and Community is the perfect place for that.
Community lessons taught by students will also have a greater focus on issues that students care about, and some that teachers may shy away from, such as the current conflict between Israel and Palestine.
The FOX 61 Student News program empowers Connecticut middle and high school students to explore the world of multi-media journalism by giving them the opportunity to capture, edit and publish original content under the guidance of industry professionals.
Each student produced and hosted segment will showcase a local story or event, highlighting all that is great about our state. Segments will be featured on-air during Friday's Morning News at 7:45 a.m., 5:45 p.m. and 10:45 p.m. news and during the FOX61 Morning News on Saturday at 7 a.m., and right here on FOX61.com!
